Mold and weeds grow–on my fence and in my yard–when I don’t pay attention. I need to pay attention to grow something besides old and mold and weeds.
I asked a friend, “So where are you on your spiritual journey?”
She replied, “I’m comfortable sitting on the fence.”
It wasn’t the right time to tell her there wasn’t a fence. Fences aren’t real. There is no sitting still. You are either moving forward or slipping backward.
Which are you?
I can slip easily enough with a slip of the tongue.
I was a little less than gracious to the clerk at Apple Farm today – what was I thinking? That I could say something in that tone and God not notice? He notices weeds and mold. I’m glad He didn’t let me get away with it. I confessed all the way home. Heavens to Betsy – who was Betsy anyway? Heavens to Betsy! Wasn’t my 2016 Word of the year Winsome? How can a word of the year make a difference if I don’t make the Word feed my soul on a regular basis?
I’ve been memorizing Colossians 3 for nine months or so now but can’t seem to get the drip-system going for verses 12-14:
So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.
I know I’m chosen. I love it that I am. But I’m chosen FOR something–so are you, and that thing doesn’t include mold and weeds and fence-sitting – no matter how pretty the fence.
Lord, when I fret, I’m not focused on Who You are. When I’m rude and impatient, I’m not paying attention to how much You love me and others. Tell me when I need some bleach on the mold and soap in the mouth. Give me a clean heart and gracious tongue. Help me grow up in You. For You. By You. Amen.
